There was a time when wine connoisseurs looked with distain on wines produced in the United States. Then, when California wines gained popularity, those made in Washington were viewed with skepticism. Wines fermented in Chile, Argentina and Australia were dismissed for years before finally being stocked on store shelves. Well, in the years ahead, you may see Chinese wines appearing in America and they may compete with Washington’s award-winning fine red wines. Surprisingly, some wines produced in China are getting good r... Full story
I am writing about the influx of flies originating from National Foods chicken ranch and/or the Perfect Blend Plant (which processes chicken manure for fertilizer) near Othello. The fly infestation hits the town of Lind and the surrounding areas with remarkable punctuality, visiting us at least 4-5 times a year. Our earliest infestation occurred in February of this year. I didn’t even know flies were active at this time of the year. The flies are unbearable. Preparing meals, doing daily chores, readying for harvest and e...

I recently read a news story of an outstanding teenager in Prosser named Walker Orr. Since he was eight years old, Walker has found innovative ways to offer a service or product in exchange for a reasonable price, from selling varieties of seeds to running a lawn mowing business. Now at the age of just 16, Walker has started a small artisan bread company, Amber Artisan Bread, selling loaves and baguettes at farmers markets in Prosser and Tri-Cities. How can we as a nation encourage budding entrepreneurs just like Walker and...
I watched the early parts of the Major League All-Star game last Tuesday. All of the fanfare is quite enjoyable. During the introductions it was fun to see who the home town Cincinnati fans have a true dislike for, and it turns out to be anyone wearing a St. Louis Cardinals uniform. Even former Cardinal Albert Pujols heard a few jeers. That happens. Of all of the all-star games this one has always been competitive. Football, basketball and hockey usually lack any semblance of...
Athletes are constantly training, preparing themselves for their next opportunity to conquer adversity. The layover that summer provides creates a decision for athletes: they can choose to take a break from the intensity and pressure of competition or to begin off-season training harder than ever before. Mid-summer’s passing serves as a milestone to remind student athletes at Lind-Ritzville High School of their commitments. Fall sports seasons are in sight, and with that comes the need for athletic paperwork and the c...
