The Lind Fire Department had a busy afternoon on Saturday, July 16, when they responded to a structure fire. While battling the fire, the department then received a call for a fire on U.S. Route 395. The call came in shortly before 3 p.m. on Saturday, for smoke coming from the basement of a home on East Sixth Street. Lind Fire Chief Kevin Starring said a low response of volunteer firefighters resulted in the department requesting mutual aid from Ritzville. By the time Ritzville arrived on scene with five firefighters in a...
The Lind-Ritzville Cooperative School Districts elected to have lead water testing completed in all of the school buildings. All of the tests came back with positive results for the school districts. Former Superintendent Rob Roettger made the decision to have the tests done with other school districts throughout the country have dealt with high lead levels. The testing of the water levels was completed through Educational Service District (ESD) 101, who contracted with TestAmerica in Spokane. The elective testing yielded pos... Full story

Pericles, a politician of Ancient Greece, is credited with coining the word “democracy” in 430 B.C. Nate Barksdale explains on history.com, “It is probable that the Athenians were not the first group of people to adopt such a system (a few places in India have traditions of local democracy that claim earlier origins) but because the Greeks named it, they have a good claim at being the ‘first’ democracy.” The Greeks’ earliest system of democracy relied on pebbles. “The Ancient Greeks used pebbles to cast their votes – apparen...
I am a strong believer that the flurry of top-down rules from the federal government threatens job creation over the long run rather than empowering individuals or moving our economy forward. Last week, the House passed an important piece of legislation to promote responsible use of our natural resources and to reverse regulatory overreach by reining in the Environmental Protection Agency and bringing its staffing levels in line with 1989 levels. I supported passage of H.R. 5538, the Fiscal Year 2017 Department of Interior, E...
Over the last 35 years our family has vacationed at the same place on the beach. While the buildings have been refurbished, the complex remains largely unchanged. However, our entertainment has changed a lot. We still swim, jump the waves and build sandcastles, but our board games, puzzles and playing cards have been replaced with kids’ electronic tablets, smart phones and movies down loaded from the Internet. We still take lots of pictures, but rather than taking them to film processing centers, we use cell phone cameras t...
My husband and I live in Wenatchee and have sped by Ritzville for years on I-90, but it was on several trips to explore the John Wayne Pioneer Trail south of Ritzville that we came to stop and appreciate your town. On our last visit this spring, we were part of a group of 4 bicyclists riding the trail. We picked up a local paper at that time and read the article from May 19, “Residents Weigh in on the Future of the John Wayne Pioneer Trail”. We know that legislators representing the 9th District have opposed the trail, and re...
You’ve probably heard the cliché “It’s like herding a bunch of cats”. That’s certainly something I relate to at the City. First, please don’t call City Hall and complain that I think everyone is a cat. This community is, in my opinion, on the verge of greatness. Our resources are substantial and varied. We have 20,000 or more cars each day traveling right past our front door. We have the potential of 1,800 locals as “built in” tourists and volunteers. We have an historic downtown, beautiful golf course, water park, muse... Full story

After losing one of the Ritzville community’s favorite pastimes when the doors of the local bowling alley closed, the facility has now reopened as Bob’s Big Bend Bowl. The alley is now open Monday through Saturday and is managed by owner Bob Seipp and his family. Seipp has an important bond with the Ritzville alley, as he helped install the lanes. The lanes were moved from Rosalia, and Seipp was instrumental in their installation, which led to the opening of alley and a pop... Full story
