A community forum on transportation is being hosted by the Coordinated Public Transit to form the Human Services Transportation Plan 2014. The forum takes place on Thursday, July 17, at 5 p.m. in the Adams County Public Works building. The Human Services Transportation Plan identifies the transportation needs of individuals with special transportation needs. The Inland Empire Philatelic Society’s annual meeting with the Tri-Cities club from Kennewick will take place on July 26. The Caring Neighbors board recently donated $900 to the Adams County Park and Rec. District No. 4 in Ritzville. The money will be used to provide low income families with season passes to the Ritzville Water Park or provide swimming lesson sessions. The council approved of a $2,660 request for payment from the Department of Transportation for design services for the airfield as well as other requests for reimbursement from the USDA, the Washington State Department of Ecology and the Washington State Department of Commerce. The July 14 meeting of the county commissioners began with a public hearing regarding the franchise renewal for the J.R. Simplot Franchise 2119, which is scheduled to expire this November. Grandpa’s Ice Cream Concession trailer, operated by Kay Dukes, is now open Saturday, Sunday and on holidays. The trailer is open from 1 p.m. until 7 p.m. across the street from Sonny’s Tavern in Washtucna. The Ritzville Golf Course’s Member/Guest Tournament took place on Saturday, July 12, at the Ritzville Municipal Golf Course. Despite the heat, 15 pairs, and a total of 64 players, competed for the prizes offered in the 18-hole best ball tournament. Brian Gordon and partner B.J. Rhode won the Low Gross with a score of 68. Facing the highest temperatures of the year, attendance at the annual Relay For Life of Ritzville and the Grateful to Be Alive Block Party was down significantly from past years, but the event still has raised over $4,000 for the American Cancer Society. The Washington State Department of Natural Resources has implemented a burn ban on DNR protected lands. The ban began July 1 and runs until Sept. 30. The ban applies to all forestlands under DNR protection but does not include federally owned lands. All burning on DNR lands is prohibited except for recreational fires in approved fire pits within designated campgrounds. Another exception is grills or barbecues fueled by gas or propane. Beulah E Hebard died on June 15. She was born on May 6, 1919, in Harrah, Washington to parents Wiley and Ellen Beryl. Beulah loved gardening and decorating her home. Dick L. Tesch died on July 5 in his home in Washtucna at the age of 80. He was born in Ritzville on April 12, 1934, to Eddie and Ida Tesch. He served in the U.S. Navy where he was a Machinist Mate on the USS Brinkley Bass. He loved fishing, hunting, woodworking and traveling. Dick was always there to help fix anything for anyone. Several teams from the surrounding areas competed in the annual Spokane Hoopfest Tournament during the last weekend in June. The tournament draws over 7,000 teams and takes over 42 downtown blocks of Spokane each year. Multiple local area teams competed in the event this year.
