The project began two years ago with the intent of planting a tree in honor of the Sprengers. Instead, Tree...
A massive fire put up quite the fight on Saturday, July 9, as Ritzville and surrounding communities united to battle the enormous flames. The fire believed to have started at a power pole and proceeded to sweep through Adams and Lincoln County, destroying nearly 2,000 acres of scabland and CRP grounds. While Adams County responds to multiple wild land fires each summer, Saturday’s blaze recorded as one of the largest in the county’s recent history. Adams County Fire Pro...
Last week was certainly one filled with remarkable sadness, when eleven police officers in Dallas were shot protecting peaceful protestors. Five of those officers were killed by what turned out to be a lone sniper. I watched the goings on with disbelief wondering why. We can debate all we want as to the real problem for the protests and would never come close to solving the problem. At one time or another we have all had issues with people in authority. Okay I know that I...
Since the construction of Grand Coulee and Bonneville dams, Washington has enjoyed an abundance of low cost, reliable hydropower. It has been one-key competitive advantage for energy intensive industries and now it is vital to our state burgeoning “clean tech industries.” Hydropower, along with nuclear, solar and wind, produce no greenhouse gases; however, solar and wind only generate electricity intermittently. Their production must be augmented by reliable sources, which include those using natural gas. Washington’s Depar...
Imagine a national health care system that works for the people who require care: patients who are able to schedule appointments and be seen by a doctor of their choice for high-quality, life-saving care that does not break the bank. That kind of patient-centered system would improve the quality of life for Americans, who want nothing more than choice, affordable care, and successful outcomes for their families. Americans know that our current health care system does not provide that kind of service. The system is not...
I am writing this letter as my year as the Ritzville Lions Club President has recently ended and we are transitioning to the summer months. During my year as President I learned several things that I thought community members would be interested in learning about. The biggest thing was in regards to the American Legion Hall that not only serves as the Lions and American Legion headquarters but also doubles as our local community hall for events. The Ritzville Lions Club purchased that building for $1 in 2000. Since that date...
Congratulations Ritzville you came through again. The four-day garage/rummage sale for The Ritz Theater, held at the Lions Club in June, was a huge success thanks to all of your donations and purchases. The main hall was full of all kinds of stuff (on tables/under tables/in boxes) and the side room was full of good furniture. Thanks to my team, (Yvonne Anderson, Jim Cobb, Lee Egnew, Carly and Liz Gillette, Pud Iltz, Kim Lantis, Janet and Don Sanger, Marge Schoessler and Marsha Smith), for getting it all set up and sold. A...
After perusing the post July 4 edition of the Journal, I am still scratching my head as to the point of the editorial cartoon. (A stunned George Washington looking out over a sky full of problem centered fireworks). Being as I actively serve my former employer concerning government affairs issues, I am very aware of the many troublesome problems facing our state government. Yet as frustrated as your flagged George Washington may be with current events, linking the listed political concerns with a “Happy 4th of July” mon...
If one of the two presidential candidates are elected, we will have set a record for having chosen one of the most disliked candidates in the history of our sharply divided country. Both The Red and The Blue are pleading for their party members to give their candidates a break and forgive their mistakes. With Hillary’s far left policies that will either greatly raise our 19.2 trillion dollar debt or cause an increase in taxes to pay for her expanded social programs. Also, she is considered to be the ultimate insider c...
