  • Changing Teams

    Dale Anderson|Updated Jul 9, 2015

A few weeks ago I was chatting with someone about the athletes we watched when we were growing up. The players that wore the hometown colors were the ones we loved to cheer for while the ones from the other towns were not really liked at all. Some were down right hated by many of us because we perceived them to be a little bit dirty. Some were just really good but we failed to see that with the types of eyewear we possessed. As time went by and we had the opportunity to get...

  • Fully funding a strong defense, pay raises for our troops is not a “waste of time”

    Updated Jul 9, 2015

The responsibility “to provide for the common defense” is one of the fundamental roles of the federal government—the duty is explicitly mentioned in the preamble of the Constitution. With the importance of preserving national security in mind, few provisions are more critical than the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). The NDAA is no ordinary piece of legislation. This annual defense bill is the legislative vehicle that authorizes funding and legal authorities required for our military to function. The NDAA funds... Full story

  • Dr. Elson Floyd is a hard act to follow

    Don C. Brunell, Business Commentator|Updated Jul 9, 2015

Dr. Elson Floyd leaves big shoes to fill at Washington State University. He was just 59 when he died of colon cancer on June 20. From the day he stepped onto the WSU campus in 2007 he was determined to make big changes, and he did just that. Locke (D) turned the state’s budget process upside down by establishing the “pr... Full story

    Updated Jul 9, 2015

As we get close to the August election the Washtucna Pioneer Cemetery Board would like to thank the community for their continued, unwavering support of the cemetery. We rely heavily on levy dollars to maintain and operate the cemetery. Last year we raised our plot rates to $500. This will help with our funding, however we want the community to realize that we typically only sell a handful of plots per year. We have decided to increase our plot rate to $800 effective January 1, 2016. This rate will be more in line with what o...

  • ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT: A rising tide lifts all boats

Stephen McFadden, Adams County Economic Development Director|Updated Jul 9, 2015

In 1963 President John F. Kennedy used this phrase in reference to a major economic development project. The popular belief is that the President’s speech writer, Ted Sorensen, first saw this phrase on a sign. It was the slogan for a regional chamber of commerce, the New England Council. How do those words apply today, to Adams County? In 2007, when a group of community leaders and stakeholders gathered around a table to discuss the idea of forming a nonprofit economic development council, we quickly adopted the mantra t...

  • El Niño Causes Drastic Weather Patterns

Emma Aldrich, LRHS Student Correspondent|Updated Jul 9, 2015

Weather patterns are easy to observe. Conjectures formed upon stepping outside include (but are surely not limited to) “it’s hot!” or “it’s never going to cool down!” While the observations come naturally, the explanations are slightly more detailed. A driving factor in the abnormal atmospheric conditions, seemingly terrorizing those brave enough to partake in outside activities, is El Niño. The National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) explains, “El Niño is characterized by unusually warm ocean temperatures in...
