  • Reviewing an officer-involved shooting

    Tim Rasmussen|Updated Jul 13, 2020

Not long ago, I reported on an officer involved shooting that occurred in Adams County. I had been asked to review the investigation to make sure it was independent of the Ritzville Police department and make the decision in the case about whether the shooting was justified. I did, and found the shooting was completely justified by the suspect's attack on the trooper with a machete. This case had been referred to the State Attorney General for review, but they declined to be involved because they had "other priorities." Now...

  • Choose your side

    Dale Anderson|Updated Jul 10, 2020

It is hard to imagine that any team that is playing today doesn’t have a uniform to wear. Not only that but all of the extra needed items like shin guards for soccer or sweat bands for basketball even if the kid doesn’t sweat. Back in the 1960’s as fifth and sixth graders we played intermural basketball games during the noon hour with referees from the high school basketball team and we didn’t have uniforms to wear. We had our PE gear as in white t-shirts and red shorts...

This year’s 4th of July fireworks displays by you, our neighbors, and our friends, was a sight to behold. Matt Carlson, Ritzville Police Department, patrolled in our neighborhood and all-around Ritzville on the 4th of July. He observed fireworks displays for a while, then at the awesome height of the display (about 10 p.m. or so), Officer Carlson played the Star-Spangled Banner o...

  • Like Poland, America needs change

    Don C. Brunell|Updated Jul 10, 2020

On July 4, 1975, America proudly celebrated its Bicentennial as the world’s greatest nation while Poland was a suppressed Soviet satellite state. Poles had no right to free speech, were hungry and impoverished. If you wanted a job, you played ball with Communist Party bosses. If you disagreed with their ideology, you likely were imprisoned. Poland was a rather bleak land which had not recovered from the German Blitzkrieg in 1939. Meanwhile, in Washington, the Business Week p...
