DONATION. Represented by Sharon Oestreich (right), the Ritzville Eagles Auxiliary No. 2739 donated $988.75 to Parks and Recreation Board Member Marie Borth. The money will be used for the “Swimming for Kids” fund at the Ritzville Water Park to provide passes and swim lessons for applicants in need of assistance. With the wheat harvest season set to begin, the Ritzville Journal is asking farmers and harvest workers to contact the office regarding the opportunity to take photos of this year’s harvest. Any harvest crew interested in participating is asked to contact The Journal by calling the office at 659-1020. On June 30, the Washington State Department of Natural Resources (DNR) instituted a burn ban on DNR-protected lands in eastern Washington effective Saturday, July 2. The ban applies to all outdoor burning on state forests, state parks and forestlands under DNR fire protection east of the crest of the Cascade Mountains. The Town of Lind is continuing to work towards finding a remedy for the water shortage issues the town experienced during the month of June. While both wells are functioning, the significant drop in water levels has become concerning and led to the Lind Town Council beginning to address and discuss options for the future. For countless years, the Ritzville Public Library staff and board members have been researching the possibility of adding a elevator or lift to the historic building. After investigating the options and receiving grant money to assist in the funding of the project, the library is expected to have the upgrade of a lift within the next year. Spring preservation work has been completed on the foundation of the historic Burroughs’ Home at 408 West Main Avenue in Ritzville. Tailsman Construction Services of Spokane did a through repair on the foundation, including removing decaying mortar and basalt rocks, and inserting new mortar. Donations from community members and fundraisers assisted in paying for the $11,000 improvements, as well as funds from the City of Ritzville. The quiet town of Washtucna took Independence Day by storm with their annual Fourth of July parade. On Monday, Main Street filled with children’s laughter and glowing faces as cars and floats made their way through the town. A spectacular display of color and noise united Ritzville residents on the evening of the June 30, as coordinators at the East Adams Care Center (EACC) illuminated the night sky with large, bursting fireworks. Benjamin Gering of Kirksville, Missouri, is one of more than 425 specially selected students nationwide participating in the Joseph Baldwin Academy for Eminent Young Scholars at Truman State University.
