  • Annual fireworks display June 30

    The annual Community Fireworks Show is set to light up the sky on June 30 at dusk. The show is sponsored by the East Adams Care Center at 406 South Jackson Street in Ritzville. At 7:30 p.m., the Hillyard Belles are performing on the EACC lawn. The live music is free, and attendees can also enjoy free popcorn, water and lemonade.     July 4 is the deadline for mail and online new registrations and voter updates prior to the August 2 Primary Election. After July 4 voter registration closes to transfers and address changes within Washington state until after the August 2 Primary Election.     Ritzville Fire Department Chief Bill Banner is reminding area residents to be cautious this Fourth of July holiday with the use of fireworks. Residents are asked to abide by all local laws regarding the use of fireworks. All firework labels should be read prior to igniting the fireworks, Banner said.   • Lind, Ritzville school boards address changes for upcoming year

    The Lind and Ritzville School Boards met on June 27 for their last meeting with Superintendent Rob Roettger and welcomed new Superintendent Matthew Ellis. Roettger is moving to the position of superintendent for the Cheney School District after five years with the local schools.     The Ritzville City Council discussed the addition of two marijuana retail stores within the city during the regular meeting on June 21. City Clerk/Treasurer Kris Robbins explained the council had initially had a moratorium on the sale of marijuana when the law first passed.   • Car prowls increase in Ritzville: Residents reminded to lock vehicles

    Since the beginning of June, the Ritzville Police Department has responded to an estimated 25 calls relating to car prowls. Residents had personal items, cash and valuables taken from the vehicles because the vehicles remained unlocked, allowing the suspects to take what was inside. Ritzville Police Chief Dave McCormick presented to the Ritzville City Council regarding the vehicle prowls.     The Washtucna community is celebrating Fourth of July with an annual breakfast, parade and barbecue on Monday. The events begin at 7 a.m. with the Firemen’s Breakfast in Bassett Park. The breakfast is available until 9 a.m. At 10:30 a.m., the kiddie and main parade begin on Main Street in Washtucna. At noon, a flag raising ceremony is held at Bassett Park, followed by the Lion’s Club barbecue.
