  • City Slicker takes second during Combine Derby

    Katelin Davidson|Updated Jun 21, 2012

During the entrance of combines during the 25th annual Lind Combine Demolition Derby, the majority of the crowd most likely underestimated the potential talent of the “City Slicker” combine, driven by Seattle native Ed Favilla. But Favilla proved that the theme of the combine did not describe the caliber of talent from the driver as he crushed his competition, eventually capturing the second place title. Favilla’s combine and outfit helped to gain the attention of spect...

  • Is a cracker celebration in order?

    Updated Jun 21, 2012

I love reading the past and present events of my old hometown. I’m looking forward to coming home in the near future. I noticed in one of the history of Ritzville, that the Ritz Cracker had been purchasing the wheat for their product. I was curious if the cracker was named after the city of Ritzville. If it was then why not have a celebration of such a history? Raymond Selcho, Coffeeville, Kan.... Full story

  • Missing Slade Gordon

    Updated Jun 21, 2012

I miss Slade Gorton on the political scene. I wrote 122 columns about him during his 10 years in the state House, 12 years as attorney general and 18 years in the U.S. Senate. So it took me a long time to read the book about him, “Slade Gorton, A Half Century In Politics” by John C. Hughes, not because it was boring, which it was not, but because I knew most of the people in it and had to read every single page. I’m not going to review it. You can buy one for yourself like I did. I will recall some of my dealings with him....

  • Education is the great equalizer

    Don C. Brunell, president|Updated Jun 21, 2012

During his term as Washington’s governor, Gary Locke’s mantra was “education is the great equalizer.” Locke, now the U.S. Ambassador to China, was correct, but in our country, today education is becoming the great separator. Here’s the problem. First, far too many students drop out of high school — nearly 7,000 each day. That adds up to about 1.2 million students a year who don’t graduate with their peers.
