As part of a 33-year effort to protect sensitive lands and improve water quality and wildlife habitat on private lands, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) will resume accepting applications for the voluntary Conservation Reserve Program (CRP). Eligible farmers, ranchers and private landowners can sign up at their local Farm Service Agency (FSA) office between June 4 and Aug. 17. The Ritz Theatre is showing the 2016 animated fantasy “Kubo and the Two Strings”, a film for kids of all ages, June 16, 7 p.m. The movie is being shown in appreciation for loyal supporters and to celebrate the beginning of summer. Travelers on Interstate 90 past Tokio Road will notice markers “under new management,” near Templin’s Country Corner. Eastern Washington residents will no longer have to travel a long distance to purchase a firearm, but now can utilize a local resource to help complete the transaction. Ritzville resident Charles Jingling recently obtained his federal firearms license (FFL), which allows him to legally assist with firearm transactions. Jingling has been considering obtaining the license for nearly 10 years, as there is not a place locally where residents can complete a firearms transaction....

Gary Dale Carlson, age 71, passed away May 31, 2018, surrounded by family. Gary was born December 27, 1946, to Jack and Georgie Carlson in Puyallup, Washington. He attended and graduated from Sprague High School. His excellence in athletics resulted in a scholarship to Olympic Community College in Bremerton, Washington, where he played football before being drafted in 1967 into the United States Army to serve in Vietnam as a 13B1O Cannon Crewman. Marion E. Beck formerly of Milton-Freewater passed away on June 10, 2018 at the Walla Walla Veterans Home at the age of 96 years. Marion Edward Beck was born on September 27, 1921 in Mabton WA to Chester and Bernice. The third of four children, Marion spent his childhood in Bickleton WA, Pilot Rock OR, and Ione OR before his family settled in Hermiston where he graduated high school in 1940.
