During the June 5 meeting, the Ritzville City Council voted 5-1 to approve a Washington State Transportation Improvement Board (TIB) consultant agreement with Varela and Associates for a upcoming road improvement project. Council Member Michelle Plumb clarified the TIB funding will cover 95 percent of the agreement cost, and the City will only have to pay the 5 percent match. In the agreement, Varela will...

You have heard the saying, “a penny saved is a penny earned.” It is certainly true, and all the more so when the sum is $15 billion. On June 7, the House or Representatives approved, and I supported, passage of H.R. 3, the Spending Cuts to Expired and Unnecessary Programs Act. H.R. 3 “rescinded” $15 billion in federal spending that is no longer needed for its intended purposes, or that has been sitting unused within agencies for years. The legislation also rescinds funding that agencies cannot spend, or have no plans to spen...
While much of the media buzz over declining salmon runs focuses on dam removal and predation by sea lions and cormorants, the U.S. Supreme Court is asked to decide whether Washington state needs to spend an additional $2.4 billion to replace more road culverts. In 2001, Western Washington Tribes sued claiming the state needed to remove culverts, which block salmon migrating to spawning channels. The Ninth Circuit agreed with the Tribes and oral arguments were heard at the Supreme Court in April. The state argues much of the...
Rural communities have a rich history of agriculture celebration and we don’t have to look any further than our own Wheat Land Communities’ Fair. While a local fair dates back considerably in time, the current site of the fair began in 1981. It has been built upon since, with donated funds, income generated from ag production, and volunteer labor. My family has had the opportunity to visit fairgrounds throughout the Northwest and I can tell you this for certain; for its size we have one of the most functional, accessible and...
