    The students at LaCrosse and Lind-Ritzville high schools are preparing to don the cap and gown in processions occurring Saturday, June 7, in the respective cities. In LaCrosse, the school district is recognizing nine students, with Graham BeDell leading the class as valedictorian.   • Mission trip to Africa topic at Washtucna service

    During the worship service on Sunday, June 8, at 10 p.m. at the Washtucna Community Church, Ritzville resident Terry Rueb will give a PowerPoint presentation on his recent mission trip to Africa. The trip took place in early January when Rueb and a team of 16 others flew to Malawi, Africa, to complete short-term missionary work. Rueb said the two weeks changed the team and also the people they met and served during the trip.     With the 2014 wheat-growing season well underway, Washington state moviegoers are getting their first theatrical-look at the Great American Wheat Harvest documentary film.   • Driver airlifted after I-90 wreck

    A mid-afternoon, single vehicle accident resulted in 22-year-old Libby, Mont., driver Lacey Anderson being airlifted to Harborview Hospital in Seattle. The vehicle had been traveling westbound, six miles west of Ritzville, when the left rear tire blew out. The blow out caused Anderson to lose control of the 1990 Toyota pickup.   • Homicide investigation ongoing in Washtucna

    Adams County Sheriff John Hunt issued a press release this afternoon after this week’s newspaper deadline regarding a shooting in Washtucna last night. On June 3, around 9:30 p.m. the Adams County Sheriff's Office received a 911 call of a shooting on Austin Road, about two miles north of Washtucna. The report stated deputies responded and located Ronnie Dick, 70, deceased at the scene from what appeared to be gunshot wounds.     After receiving a call around 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 3, regarding a potential homicide shooting in the Washtucna area, Adams County Sheriff’s Office dispatched personnel to the scene.     Chris Eugene Oestreich, 55, died suddenly from a heart attack on May 26. He was born March 16, 1959, in Spokane, and was a lifelong resident of Ritzville. He was the eldest of five children born to Pete and Erma Oestreich of Ritzville. He knew at a very early age that his career would be driving a truck. He was employed as a commercial truck driver for more than 33 years by Snider Trucking in Ritzville. It has been said he was a man of hard work and integrity and was very dedicated to his career.     Thomas (Tom) Edward Hays, long-time resident of Washtucna, died May 7, 2014, in Colfax. He was born on Aug. 1, 1927, at a home near Castle Rock, Mont., the youngest of Robert E. (Pudge) and Susie E. Hays’ six children. He grew up in Colstrip, Mont. In 1944 on his 17th birthday he joined the U.S. Navy. On Dec. 7, 1947, he married Jonnee Hays and with the war being over and as a new married couple, they set out on a new life’s venture to Washtucna, where he found work as an auto mechanic.     Raymond Charles Schmitt died May 31. He was born July 8, 1941, to Otto and Agnes (Pierre) Schmitt of Cheney. He and his brother and sister were the first set of triplets to survive at Sacred Heart Hospital. A 1959 graduate of Cheney High School, he was raised on the farm in the Lance Hills where he continued to work until he met Joan Stromberger of Sprague in a hay field and later married in 1969.
