For me, the majority of the 2011-2012 school year has been spent thinking about, working on, and preparing for, the beginning of the academic cooperative. I knew when I applied for and accepted the superintendent position for the Lind and Ritzville school districts that this would be the case. I also understood that this process would require me to make many difficult decisions and that there would be some discomfort in both communities and districts. Although the beginning of the 2012-2013 school year will undoubtedly bring...
I made a quick trip south of Ritzville last Monday afternoon and stripe rust could be found on susceptible varieties at low and moderate levels depending upon the field and location within a field. With the cooler damp weather this week farmers should be scouting their winter wheat for stripe rust and determining if fungicide application is required. Varieties that are more susceptible and should be scouted sooner include Eltan, Masami, ORCF 102, ORCF 103, and Xerpha. ORCF 102 has a high level of high temperature adult plant...

This is in response to Mr. Ray’s letter in the May 10, edition of the Ritzville Adams County Journal titled, “Extended hours for liquor sales unwise.” Wow indeed. He collected some statistics intended to support his claim that extended hours for liquor sales is not a good idea. Then he threw in some unsupported statements that have no basis in fact. Such as: “Time passed and the ‘thirsty liberals’ started incrementally changing the rules.” That sounds like his biased opinion to me. “Now our ‘wealthy friends in Seattle want t...
On Sunday, May 13, Ritzville Foursquare Church celebrated the 100-year anniversary of its church building, known for most of its years as the Philadelphia Congregational Church. History is not the inanimate building, with the cornerstone that reads, May 12, 1912, but history is the people that brought life to the building within its walls. That was the story Amy Galbreath shared during the service briefly covering the 100-year history. It really began 124 years ago, four and...

Currently, such projects undergo a rigorous environmental review known as an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) involving months or even years of public hearings and analysis b...

I think we often use terminology in our everyday conversation that is exaggerated to make a point. It bothers me when I hear certain things and I don’t mean to offend anyone, but when someone says that they’ve had a life changing moment, I question it. For instance, on Monday I heard about a boxer who had a motorcycle accident and was paralyzed from the waist down. That is a life changing moment. Someone who is in war and loses an appendage in battle deals with a life changing moment. Losing a loved one can also be a lif...
