    The Lind-Ritzville/Sprague tennis team has two athletes preparing for the state tennis competition on May 29-30 in Yakima. Rose Melville qualified for the state tournament out of Regionals, while Mark Wilbers moves on as an alternate. Head Coach Liz Melville said the Regional Tournament was brutal on the Bronco athletes competing, but is glad two athletes came out victorious.     While protesters were trying to block a Shell oil rig from docking in Elliott Bay, a team of surgeons and nurses at Vancouver’s Legacy Salmon Creek Hospital was replacing my left hip. Interestingly, the tools used in both places primarily came from raw materials made from coal, oil and natural gas. Some of the Seattle protestors were in a flotilla of kayaks – boats made, ironically, from petroleum-based products.     Kenneth G. Melcher, 88, died May 24. He was born March 19, 1927 to Jake and Mollie (Horst) Melcher in Odessa, WA. He married Bernice Lobe on August 21,1949. Ken retired in 2007 after a 60-year career of wheat farming in Odessa. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Frances and brother Robert.   • Ten Bronco athletes qualify for state track

    The Lind-Ritzville/Sprague Broncos track and field team traveled to Central Valley High School in Spokane on Friday, May 22, to compete in the 1B/2B District 7/9 Championships. The team had 15 athletes compete, and 10 qualified for state. The 10 athletes now move on to compete at Eastern Washington University in the state contest on May 29-30.     FATHER/SON NIGHT. The Ritzville Lion’s Club hosted the annual father/son night on May 12.     LaCrosse team earns trip to nationals, Wigen elected state reporter Three local FFA chapters traveled to the annual State FFA Convention in Pullman on May 14-17. With team members competing in a variety of contests, the chapters returned home successful. LaCrosse had an awarding year, with one team qualifying for nationals this fall.
