  • Hot Cows Don’t “Got Milk”!

    Updated May 21, 2015

I just read an article that says, “Cows can feel the heat just like people. Heat stress can significantly reduce cows’ appetite, fertility and milk production levels during the summer, according to Cargill Inc. The stress can begin when the temperature-humidity index reaches 68, which is still a comfortable level for most people. Cargill thinks it has a solution.” (http://www.startribune.com/cargill-new-feed-products-can-protect-overheated-cows-during-summer-heat/303520921/) Let’s hope it works. Because globally we just ha...

  • Freedom of speech commonly misused

    Updated May 21, 2015

Most of my life I remember that there was a serious penalty for doing or saying things that could cause a riot or serious injuries. It is also deeply imbedded in my memory that we have freedom of speech that I believe has been abused by using these incendiary statements. During the last decade it seems that our great Republic has seen some African-American leaders abuse the law about free speech to the point these words have helped incite riots. These riots appear to be getting larger in scope and longer in duration....

  • Support needed to keep live events at theatre

    Updated May 21, 2015

My wife and I attended The Doghouse Boyz performance last Friday night at The Ritz Theater. It was an incredible show. Two very talented performers kept us totally entertained for over two hours. The venue was impressive-our local theater has been lovingly restored with comfortable seating, ample leg room, and a new stage setup that worked beautifully. The performance was an eclectic mix of jazz and blues with incredible guitar and bass talent clearly evident. The new stage system allowed us to watch the performance with a... Full story

  • People in Glass Houses

    Don C. Brunell, Business Commentator|Updated May 21, 2015

There’s an old saying that people living in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones. The moral is that before criticizing others, you should make sure your own house is in order. Companies, such as REI, supporting Gov. Inslee’s climate change legislation should heed that advice. REI is an iconic Northwest retailer of high-end outdoor gear popular with nature enthusiasts and millennials. REI has been a big booster of Gov. Inslee’s climate change agenda, which pits Washington businesses against one another. The company hosted... Full story

  • Whiskey Gap Distillery open for visitors during Memorial Day weekend

    Courtney Geschke|Updated May 21, 2015

Brandon and Tricia Egbert are the proud new owners of Ritzville’s first distillery. The Whiskey Gap Distillery is named after an area north of Spokane through northern Idaho and Montana. The area was called the “whiskey gap” by rumrunners in the 1920’s who brought alcohol from Canada into Spokane during prohibition. Dennis Chamberlain, owner of Uniquely Washington, brought the idea to Brandon during last year’s Memorial Day car show. Brandon, residing between Connell a...
