Chapters from across the state converged at the Washington FFA State Convention last week in Pullman to compete and award the state’s outstanding teams. The Lind FFA Meats Evaluation and Technology Team took first place at the event and are now moving on to the National FFA Convention this fall. The Caring Neighbors board recently donated $1,500 to the Ritzville Elementary School. The donated money is being used to help fund the “Raising a Reader” program at the Preschool at Ritzville Elementary School. Ann-Marie Hunt, daughter of John and Heidi Hunt, earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education with a focus in Special Education from Eastern Washington University in December of 2011. The LRS tennis team traveled to the district tournament last week and the success of the athletes is sending many of the athletes on to compete in the regional tournament at West Valley on Friday, May 18 and Saturday, May 19. Zach Swanger is the only male LRS athlete moving on to the regional competition in the No. 1 singles position. The LRS girl’s Fastpitch team competed in the last league game on Tuesday, May 15, against the Davenport Gorillas. The Gorillas scored two runs in the first inning, taking an early lead over the Broncos. Alicia Bolin scored one run in the first and one run in the second inning to tie the Gorillas. The annual Title 1/Learning Assistance Program (LAP) public meeting is being held Thursday, May 31, at 1:30 p.m. at the Ritzville Grade School. During the first part of the meeting, information about the programs is going to be given. Parents have the opportunity to give input for next year’s program. Pertussis, whooping cough, has reached epidemic levels in the state of Washington. According to disease investigators at the Department of Health, over 1,200 cases have been reported in the state through April 28, compared to 117 over the same time last year. There were 965 cases reported in 2011. The epidemic is on pace for as many as 3,000 cases in 2012. An estimated 79 individuals from the local communities took to the streets in Spokane to compete in the 36th annual Bloomsday Run on Sunday, May 6. An overwhelming 47,841 individuals competed in the race. The youngest local competitor was one-year-old Claire Borth from Ritzville. The Grand Coulee Dam visitor center is open daily and public tours are being offered. Currently the visitor center is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tours are given daily into the John W.
