The LRS tennis team finished league play on Tuesday, April 23, in a match against Wilbur-Creston (WC) before traveling to the Inland Empire Tournament over the weekend. Against WC, the LRS boys and girls’ teams took a 4-1 victory and secured the girl’s position as the number one team in the league, with the boys’ team ended as the second place team. The number one singles competition for the boys went in favor of Zach Swanger, who defeated Steven Paunovich 6-1, 6-1. The number one doubles team of Alex Wheeler and Kyle Canaday...
Jerry Neilan achieved his lifelong goal and set a new record at the Ritzville Bowling Alley on April 18 when he bowled the first ever 800 series recorded at the local alley. It also marked the first time the 73-year-old has bowled an 800-series. He earned the house and personal record by bowling 250, 265 and 299 games during the league competition and was bowling as a member of the Cow Creek team. Neilan began competitively bowling at the age of 19, and he said it took him...
The LRS Lady Broncos’ fastpitch team lost a doubleheader Saturday to Springdale, 17-1 and 21-8. Wednesday they hosted Davenport in a rescheduled doubleheader. Results were not available at press time as the games weren’t played until after this week’s newspaper was finished. The Lady Broncos needed to win both games to force a sixth place tie with Reardan. If they win both games then they would likely play on Saturday in a tiebreaker with Reardan at a neutral site. If LRS didn...

In reference to a letter published on April 11: That sounds like pretty good advice, but is it? If its followed by judgment and negativity? Looks like we are criticizing for criticizing for… Don’t we want to encourage our citizens to get involved in the community? Not discredit and shame them if they aren’t in attendance at meetings. Good for the people who do attend; let’s try to get more of them. Why criticize the people who care enough to voice their opinions and even to write in? If they don’t have full informati... As most know, the Hospital District has placed a bond issue on the ballot for this fall. For voters to make a sound decision, they need a lot of information, much of which is apparently not as widely known as it should be. For the moment, though, let’s focus on the threshold issue: does this community need a hospital at all? That might seem too obvious to need discussion, but claims that it does not have been heard in public, so let’s look. First off, the crucial aspect is neither hospital rooms nor a clinic: it is the Eme...
Your editorial of April 25 offers many fascinating statements worthy of thoughtful consideration. For example you wrote: “In a sense, we have been hit with everything at once in terms of the water system. Before that the failed sewer system was the crisis.” How did it happen that WE have been hit with a water system crisis preceded by a failed sewer system crisis? Our city is led by a mayor who has been attending city council meeting for some 25 years. The failed sewer system happened on her watch. How did it happen that the...
I want to encourage the citizens of Washtucna to consider filing to be a candidate for the commissioner positions in Park and Recreation District No. 2, which runs the Washtucna Pool. We want commissioners who are not only interested in the maintenance and management of the pool and its program, and have a vision for its future, but who could also serve with the good will and trust of their neighbors. In the past year the commissioners ran two levies, which failed to pass with the legally prescribed majority of votes....

Education in the United States has been floundering for many years. I believe that it started when they did away with the eighth grade examination, started kindergarten and stopped having potential teachers pass a comprehensive test. The test was an instrument that gave school districts a good indication that a candidate was knowledgeable and it gave the teachers a valid reason to claim they were a profession. Kindergarten as it is now used, is a financial waste! Parents should be given a list of skills that their children ne...
The grocery store, local restaurants and the sidelines of sporting events have a tendency to become mini conference centers for me. The beauty of rural community newspapers is the fact most readers and residents know who the publisher and editor are. People we have never met recognize us and know what we do for a living. The end result is we often find ourselves in impromptu conversations about things happening in the community. Often times during these spontaneous chats someone will ask me a question about a specific thing t...
Question the actions of local government as often as you like. Elected leaders and publicly funded administrators should not be allowed to operate without oversight. The beauty of the system in Washington is that government must be transparent and accountable as established by state law and repeatedly supported by judges in Washington courts. The public records laws and the Open Public Meeting Act provide certain assurances that the public will be allowed to monitor elected officials and public entities. This is needed and va... I’m sure you’ve heard of the game where you get 10 or 12 people together where the first person in line reads a sentence of about eight words and they whisper into the next person in line’s ear what is written on the paper. Then that person turn’s to the next and whispers into the next person’s ear and so on. When the last person gets the message they tell everyone know what they heard. Of course by the time it gets to the end of the line the message can be far different... Full story
