Ritzville High School students participated in and completed a successful diaper drive for the Vanessa Behan Crisis Nursery (VBCN) in Spokane. Gerri Manke, a former Ritzville resident, volunteers her time at the nursery and presented to the RHS student body earlier this year. The Spokane Area Sheep Producer Association (SASPA) holds its annual field day in Sprague on Saturday, May 19, from 9 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. Participants are to meet at the Rustemeyer farm, north of Sprague on State Route 23, at 9 a.m. and caravan to the Clemenson and Swannack farms during the day. Eleanor June Deking passed away April 18, at 91 years of age. She was born Eleanor June Thiel to Jacob and Anna Thiel on June 28, 1920. She was the youngest of six children. The family farmed the Thiel homestead just west of Ritzville. She attended Ritzville Schools and graduated from Ritzville High School in 1939. At 6 p.m. every Wednesday during the school year, the doors of the Methodist church are opened wide for the Wednesday Night Youth gathering, which the Methodist and Foursquare churches partner to provide. From 6:30 until 8 p.m. each week, 50 to 70 local youth, who range from grades one through 12, are fed and led by volunteers. I am a volunteer with the fourth through sixth graders.
