This is the time of year where a lot of things are going on but deciding what is interesting to write about is a little more difficult. I’m sure that a lot of people have their ideas of what a good story would be but those thoughts may not be something I want to talk about. I do think it is interesting that we hype the college basketball season so much and get riveted with the conference tournaments and try to figure out ways to watch as much March Madness without getting f...
A cloudy rain-threatening day covered the Spokane Falls Community College campus as 67 teams converged for the Van Kuren Track and Field Invite on April 13. Lind-Ritzville sent a portion of the track and field team, because entries in each event at a meet this large are limited. A number of LRS competitors were listed as DNS (Did Not Start), so final results for the team were sparse. Sparse doesn't mean futile, however, as the youngest LRS team members scored the only team...
The Lind-Ritzville/Sprague Lady Broncos softball team had a mixed bag of results last week, sweeping one league doubleheader while getting swept in another. The Lady Broncos started out the week on fire, sweeping the Reardan Indians in a home doubleheader on April 16. In game No. 1 of the doubleheader, the LRS offense broke out the bats in the fourth inning, scoring 11 runs to help power a 16-6 victory over Reardan. The game was tied 3-3 heading into the bottom of the fourth,...
LRS’s golf team has traveled both south and north in the past two weeks. Last Tuesday, April 16, found the team traveling to the far southeast corner of Washington to match strokes with host Asotin at a Clarkston golf course. The team is down to four members for the rest of the year: two men and two women. At Clarkston, Morgan Brausen shot an 88 for the 18-hole course. Dirk Dahlman more than matched him with his own 85. On the women’s side, Molly Hane carded 126 – which matches the score needed for a woman to compete in the s...
The Lind-Ritzville/Sprague Broncos baseball team went 3-1 in league play last week, sweeping the Reardan Indians at home on April 16 and splitting a road doubleheader against the Liberty Lancers on April 20. The Broncos end regular season league play with a record of 3-5, and will play two more non-league doubleheaders before postseason play begins. In the first game of the home doubleheader against Reardan, the Broncos narrowly pulled out a 3-1 victory. LRS got on the board...

Dear Friends, During the five years that our bipartisan coalition led the Senate, we could protect the people from any bad or extreme (or both) legislation that came over from the Democrat-controlled House. Of course, the House would also block the good bills we sent over from the Senate, which was frustrating. But in the end, fewer bills became laws, and those that did leaned toward the political center. In that sense I think the people of our state were served well by having a divided Legislature. Now that the Legislature...

StageWest Community Theatre proudly presents “The Savannah Sipping Society,” written by Jessie Jones, Nicholas Hope and Jamie Wooten and directed by Kay Bryon Pacheco. This is a delightful, laugh-a-minute comedy about four unique Southern women, all needing to escape the sameness of their day-to-day routines, who are brought together by Fate—and an impromptu happy hour—and decide that it is high time to reclaim the enthusiasm for life they have lost through the years. Over the course of six months—filled with laughter, hilari...

Imagine sitting home and learning Fortune Magazine just listed you among the world’s greatest leaders? That’s exactly what happened to Marilyn Bartlett who led the effort to save Montana’s state employee health insurance plan from bankruptcy. In April, Bartlett was ranked No. 16 on a list which featured global leaders including Bill and Melinda Gates, New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, Michael J. Fox and Apple’s Tim Cook. “Our sixth annual leaders list is the home...
Tax Day is a day that has been historically regarded as stressful, complicated, and unworthy of any significant praise. It is a day that is typically dreaded by American taxpayers and business owners. However, on Monday, April 15th, we observed the first Tax Day under the new Republican tax code that was signed into law in December 2017. This is a huge milestone, and for the first time in decades, there is reason to celebrate. I voted to support the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act because our tax code was outdated, convoluted, and...

The city’s nuisance property ordinance was a topic of discussion at the most recent Ritzville City Council meeting on April 16, while the process continued for the eventual construction of a memory care center in Ritzville. In accordance with Chapter 3.36 of the Ritzville City Code, “Nuisances,” the City recently sent out a notice of violation on March 22 to a couple that several vehicles on their property were in violation of the city code. The couple attended the council meeting on April 16, and were seeking some answe...
