    Stephen McFadden|Updated Apr 19, 2012

Even after the cancer diagnoses two years ago, I was rattled, but not truly awakened by the revelation. I was young, big (too big actually) and strong, so I thought I could survive the treatment and keep working at least part time. I was wrong. It wouldn’t be the last time my arrogance and I would hit a wall together. When the oncologist told me the treatment for head and neck cancer is one of the worst and most difficult to endure I was a skeptic. It took 27 years, but I’ve evolved into a pessimist. I needed to be able to... Full story

  • The Team Concept...

    Dale Anderson|Updated Apr 19, 2012

A little over a week ago, the Ritzville Lions hosted the annual father-daughter night. It isn’t easy coming up with a program for this night, but we’ve had a lot of great ideas and they turn out pretty good. On this night, we asked Brittany Kubik if she would be willing to talk to the daughters. Since she is the daughter of Lion Gary it worked out well for him to escort Brittany to the dinner. For anyone who doesn’t remember, Brittany played on the last Ritzville Bronco volley... Full story

  • Bur Buttercup versus Puncturevine, knowing the difference between these spring weeds

    Updated Apr 19, 2012

One of the early spring weeds found in Adams County is Bur Buttercup. It is often confused with Puncturevine because of the bur type seed. Both are annuals but only Puncturevine is a noxious weed. Bur Buttercups emerge, flower and form seed early in the spring usually before Puncturevine even emerges. Bur Buttercup is highly toxic to livestock, especially sheep. It is a small, low growing plant that grows two to five inches tall. It has one, to several, leafless stems arising from a cluster of basal leaves. Many white or...

  • Marathon session clears the way for Legislature to adjourn

    Updated Apr 19, 2012

At about an hour after sunrise Wednesday, following a marathon session of negotiating that turned into an all-nighter, the Legislature adjourned for the year. It’s difficult to convey what that final day was like, Tuesday was day 30 of the 30-day special session the governor had called, but it was sort of like being close to the end of harvest, with an unfriendly weather forecast hanging over your head and knowing that one or more pieces of equipment could break down at any time. You know you might be forced to stop, but y... Full story

    Rob Roettger-Superintendent, Lind, Ritzville Schools|Updated Apr 19, 2012

Currently, as school districts, we are considering the implementation of a weekly release time during the 2012-2013 school year. I want to take this opportunity to discuss the structure, as well as the purpose and importance, of weekly release time for our staff members and our system as a whole. Beginning in the fall of 2012, we are proposing to utilize either a weekly late start on Monday mornings or an early release on Wednesday afternoons. A Monday morning late start would mean that school would start at 9:35 instead of...
