  • Bracket Breakers

    Dale Anderson|Updated Mar 31, 2016

If your bracket didn’t blow up in the first two rounds of the tournament I’m sure it took a turn for the worse over the weekend. All four number ones had a shot to move on in the NCAA tournament. They made the elite eight portion but three of the teams stumbled and had to book flights home for the season and not to Houston where the Final Four will be played out. Oklahoma took care of UO on Saturday, as in Oklahoma bested one seeded Oregon eliminating the Pac 12’s final entry...

  • Standing with Belgium: Attacks show necessity for plan to defeat ISIS

    Updated Mar 31, 2016

ast Tuesday, the world was again horrified by coordinated terrorist attacks at the airport and subway in Brussels, Belgium. Dozens of people lost their lives, and many more were injured. Even before they took official responsibility, there was little doubt that the perpetrators would turn out to be ISIS affiliates, whose attacks in Paris last November took the lives of 130 people. At the time of this writing, four Americans have been confirmed to have lost their lives in the Belgium attacks. These horrific acts against...

  • For whom the roads toll

    Don C. Brunell, Business Commentator|Updated Mar 31, 2016

Road and bridge tolls keep many elected officials awake at night. They often inflame voters because they are costs motorists see while driving; whereas, a gas tax is hidden in the price of a gallon of fuel. Too often people filling up their cars ignore the stickers on the pumps, which break down the state and federal taxes they are paying. In Washington, the combined gas tax is now 62.9 cents a gallon while signs are posted from Tacoma to Bremerton tells you crossing the Tacoma Narrows Bridge costs between $5 and $7...

  • Legislative Commentary

Senator Mark Schoesler, Ninth District|Updated Mar 31, 2016

While the speed limits on our roads may be inconvenient at times, they exist for a reason. You can complain that the speed limit is too restrictive (and bills to raise speed limits on certain roads have been introduced during this legislative term) but that’s no excuse for ignoring the law. A 2012 state law places a limit on government spending. Not only does the budget have to balance for the two-year cycle it covers (2015-17, currently), but the spending level it sets also can’t exceed the amount of available revenue exp... Full story

  • Alumni supporting school bond

    Updated Mar 31, 2016

As an alumnus of RHS, I am very proud of the education I received from the Ritzville School District. It included academics, the performing arts and sports. We had the Gilson gym, the elementary gym and the high school auditorium and gym. It worked. Now there is only the Gilson gym and the elementary gym. I can understand why space is minimal. The new facility would be multifaceted just as the former and existing structures were and are. The structures have always been used for school and community activities which have not...

  • Learning to practice tolerance, not violence

    Updated Mar 31, 2016

Over the last few weeks we have experienced several significant events, both sacred and profane. Many say that the profanity of the terrorist attacks is due to our supposed intolerance of Islam. On the sacred side, it has been presumed by some that Passover should have been observed last week, because the Roman Catholic and Protestant holy day of Easter was observed last weekend. This not the case. Passover will be observed on April 23rd, because Passover is based on the barley harvest, as the bible dictates and not the... Full story
