  • Barking Points: Benefits of a Bike Rack

Emma Aldrich, LRMS Student Correspondent|Updated Mar 20, 2014

The clearing skies, maturing flowers and greening grass are commonly associated with the welcoming of spring. All of the above are excellent excuses to become re-acquainted with the outdoors throughout some fresh, crisp air and physical activity. For many Lind-Ritzville Middle School students, the opportunity to enjoy some outdoor activity comes daily when Lind residents ride their bicycles to school. With an increased number of morning cyclists arises an issue: there is no bike rack on LRMS campus for students to safely...

  • The Positive Outlook...

    Updated Mar 20, 2014

I would like to look back on a great season for both the Bronco boys’ and girls’ teams. Making it to the state tournament is a goal that most athletes set for themselves at some point in time in their careers. I’m sure most of the girls weren’t sure how far they would go this year, especially when senior Maya Wahl was in the hospital after only a couple of games into the season. With one less experienced starter out for the season, it meant that every player would need to step up in every practice and every game. It was nec... Full story

  • Hawaii and the electric cow

    Don C. Brunell, Washington Business Commentator|Updated Mar 20, 2014

Normally, you wouldn’t think the cost of electricity would clobber ranchers, but in Hawaii, high power rates are the central competitiveness issue. In fact, the owners of the mammoth Parker Ranch on Hawaii’s big island have calculated their “per cow” electricity costs. Much of the famed ranch’s 130,000 acres is rich grazing land on a high plateau between Hawaii’s twin 13,000 ft. volcanoes. Parker Ranch is one of the nation’s largest beef producers, with much of its product sent to the mainland. The ranch has an extensive wat... Full story

  • What is Homeland Security doing?

    Updated Mar 20, 2014

It is getting close to a year since we had an armed assault on a power station in California and we have no answers from our government. Last April 16 a person or persons slipped into an underground vault outside of San Jose. Telephone cables were cut in a way that made them difficult to repair. Cameras picked up a streak of light about a half hour later and snipers opened fire. The shooter appeared to be aiming at the transformer’s cooling systems that were filled with oil. The system leaked 52,000 gallons that caused the s... Full story

  • Legislative Commentary

    Updated Mar 20, 2014

For several years now the question hasn’t been “When will the legislative session end?” but “Will a ‘special’ session be called?” I’m glad to report that when the Legislature adjourned this past Thursday, on schedule, no one was talking about bringing us back to Olympia – except the governor. It’s the first time since 2009 that the session ended on time, and the first time since 2008, if you look only at the “short” sessions in even-numbered years. It was nearing midnight when the Senate and House of Representatives took wh...
