    There are five candidates for this year’s Ritzville Distinguished Young Women program that takes place on Mar. 16 at 7 p.m. in the Gilson Gymnasium. The junior class women participating in this event are Emily Buriak, Amalia Perez, Brooke Pichette, Jordan Schultz and Taylor White.     The Ralston Grange is sponsoring an afternoon of Bingo and Bunko at the hall on Sunday, Mar. 18 at 3 p.m. and it is open to all area residents. Bingo and prizes are in the basement of the hall and Bunko, an easy to learn dice game, is in the main hall.     The FFA Ag Issues team from Ritzville High School is visiting the Ralston Grange Hall on Tuesday, March 20 at 7 p.m. to practice for an upcoming competition. The demonstration includes discussion about the Columbia Irrigation Extension of the East Low Canal. Ralston Grange members, as well as the general public, are encouraged to attend to the demonstration to show support for the group and help them prepare for the competition.     On Friday, Mar. 2 at 9:40 p.m., the Adams County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a home invasion robbery on the 2000 block of Bench Road, one mile south of Othello. When deputies arrived, they located a 23-year-old male who had been struck in the face with the butt of a shotgun. He was transported to Othello Community Hospital by ambulance.     Students from both Lind and Ritzville school districts traveled to Reardan for the Bi-County Academic contest on March 8. Ritzville Grade School had 32 students participating in the event and 21 of those students were top placers in the contest. Lind Middle School also took 32 students to the contest with 21 students finishing as finalists in their events.   • Doyle eyeglass collection senior project concludes

    Micheala Doyle completed her senior project of collecting eyeglasses on March 2, ending her project with five times the amount she thought she would collect. Doyle collected 161 pairs of eyeglasses in the first month of the project and another 94 pairs of glasses were donated during the second month. Finishing the project with 255 pairs of eyeglasses, Doyle is overjoyed with the total outcome of the event.     During a time when state supported colleges and junior colleges are having state funding reduced it seems to me that they are overlooking a possible solution. They could reduce the enrollment by being selective on who they admit. They can justify being more selective because nationwide only 50 percent who enroll will graduate.     Hilda Josephine (Abrahamson) Roberts passed away peacefully at Life Care Center in Ritzville on March 7 at the age of 100. She was born on July 19, 1911, in Spokane to Hjalmar and Josephine M. (Paradis) Abrahamson. She met the love of her life, Hobert Clayton Roberts, and they were married Jan. 25, 1930. They moved to Marengo, Wash., in 1943, where she worked as a railroad clerk and the town postmaster. They moved back to Spokane in 1957, where she worked at a hearing aid...
