We would like to express our appreciation to the LRS coaches and basketball team for the spectacular performance at the State B tournament in Spokane recently. Our collective hearts thank each of the players as well as every person who contributed in someway to the “team effort” displayed, the pride, and all the work involved that went into the past season. It goes to show what small communities are made up of when they have a common goal. We look forward to next year. P.S. Great coverage Journal! Marsha Smith, Mary Nell Mas... Full story
According to President Obama, and his budget office, the sequester cuts are indiscriminate and spell out specific percentages that will be subtracted from federal “projects, programs and activities,” or PPAs. The White House says it must now cut across the board regardless of how important a given PPA is. Not so fast! PPAs are a technical category of the federal budget, but the sequester actually occurs at the roughly 1,200 broader units known as budget accounts. Some accounts are small, but others contain hundreds of PPA... Full story
Let this letter be a warning to anyone who expresses their views in writing to be published. Executing your first amendment rights to free speech does not set well with some long time residents in this area and they will definitely let you know that your kind is not wanted. Because of my letter to the editor opposing Project 56, I have twice been verbally abused in public. Both times resulted in a yelling match in a public gathering place! The first encounter was over a month ago and the last one was just last week. The...

Anytime I watch a game I hope for nothing but the best from the athletes that are participating. I know a fair amount of other fans who expect nothing but the best from those same players. The one problem with this thought process is that humans are not machines that are programmed to work to perfection. And even machines have a tendency to break down. But some people think that when you pay admission everyone should be at their best for the entire game. I’ve had that p...
Many of you know I’m not one to hold my fire when a state agency does something irresponsible, such as waste taxpayer dollars. At the same time, while state government is still bigger overall than it really needs to be, I’ll gladly point out examples of good government. One of those is our state Department of Agriculture, which is marking its 100th anniversary this year. Dan Newhouse, a Sunnyside farmer with whom I had the pleasure of serving in the House of Representatives, has been WSDA director for several years; if any... Full story
