A candle, left burning on a dresser is believed to be the cause of a fire that claimed the life of a three-year-old girl last week in Lind. The Adams County Sheriff’s Office issued a press release Monday, indicating the candle was the source of the fire. “The candle is believed to be the source of ignition, surrounding the candle was a box of disposable diapers and clothing. After nearly 10 years of studies and debate, Adams County Public Hospital District No. 2 finds itself at a crossroads: it must either bring its existing, 60-year-old hospital up to code compliance to satisfy the State of Washington or construct a new hospital. The Tigercats secured bragging rights as one of the top eight 1B teams in the state with a 59-52 win over Wellpinit in the regional tournament on Saturday. The Southeast District 9 is well represented at the state tournament this year as Pomeroy also earned a trip after defeating Odessa-Harrington. The Tigercats took to the court with confidence and an early scoring run led by Darcy Stamper gave the Tigercats the lead they would maintain for the remainder of the game....
American manufacturing is more dependent on the metals and minerals access than ever before. Yet, we are tied with Papau New Guinea for the time it takes to permit a new mine. Seven to 10 years is the average delay period. Waiting for technology metals will severely hamper our ability to innovate our advance weapons systems that are increasingly metals intensive. The U.S. has domestic resources for 18 of those 19 metals and minerals that we now exclusively import from abroad. However, a maze of government regulations has...
Where’s Hospital Commissioner Snyder’s resignation? Am I the only one that heard his election promise, “As long as I’m a hospital commissioner, there will be no new hospital!” Now it seems he is on the building committee, and asking this community to pass a bond issue to build a new hospital. Where are the local contractors that were going to be used to repair and refurbish our present hospital? Wasn’t he going to keep the repair dollars in the community? How is that working? It sounds to me like Mr. Snyder is the consumm... Full story
The future of healthcare in the area deserves a solid, collaborative discussion. For the better part of 10 years, Adams County Public Hospital District No. 2 has struggled with the aging condition of a 60-year-old hospital facility. Countless studies have been done at great expense to the district and the taxpayers supporting it. For the most part the studies come to the same conclusion: The existing facility can be brought up to code or it can be renovated to stretch its life just a little bit longer. Both options however,...

Feb. 22 is, in the language of the Legislature, the “last day to read in committee reports in house of origin” for all legislative policy committees. Translation: it’s officially the last day for the Senate and House policy committees to act on legislation originating in the Senate and House, respectively. Legislation not acted upon before the end of today will be considered “dead” for the year, although bills have been known to come back from the dead with the same text under a new number. The legislative fiscal committee...
Last fall’s State 2B Championship Football game for our Broncos was a teachable moment. That come from behind football victory was and is a metaphor for what Ritzville needs in it’s future. Ritzville needs another 21-19 score spiritually and economically. Joel nailed it when God through him declared: “And afterward, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions” (Joel 1: 2:8). Coach Whitmore and his staff had their work cut out p...
