Though most of the sewer problems the Ritzville City Crews have been dealing with stem from tree roots because of the mild winter, Public Works Director Larry Swift asks residents to avoid putting things in the toilet that don’t belong. “It’s unbelievable some of the stuff we find,” he said. Throughout the years city crews have found several different items, either in the pipes themselves or at the sewage treatment plant. Items include aerosol cans, clothing, as well as whole apples and potatoes. Items that should not be...

With the departure of Grace Shelby as the director, the Adams County Development Council (ACDC) began their search for a replacement last fall. The ACDC faced a problem, however, of not being able to offer a salary that would be competitive as a director so the position was reorganized, to work more closely with Adams County Economic Director Stephen McFadden. The ACDC filled the position of Manager and Business and Marketing Specialist with Joey Hanson, with Dec. 1, 2014, being her first day on the job. Her primary...

For many, high school is a stepping stone along the pathway of higher education. It is important that opportunities after high school are left open, not limited by factors like finance or availability. This is the mindset behind Senate Bill 5954: The Washington State Senate Committee on Higher Education is currently hearing a bill that would put a cap on the maximum tuition rate that public universities in Washington could charge students. Based on a percentage of median annual wage in the state, the set rates of tuition...

I saw an interview the other day that featured Ohio State basketball coach Thad Motta. The interview was nearly over when I started watching but I thought the subject matter was interesting and thought provoking. He told the interviewer that he was always stymied when listening to so called basketball experts who were talking about certain teams that were on the bubble (having a 50-50 chance of making the NCAA tournament) in January. Motta said, “There are a lot of very i...
Listening to local families, businesses, and farmers in the Mid-Columbia region, I’ve heard firsthand how the slowdown and partial shutdowns at our 29 ports along the West Coast have had a devastating economic impact on Central Washington’s economy. Every day I hear countless stories about the heavy price Washingtonians are paying, such as workers who are being laid off and farmers facing bankruptcy – because they simply cannot get their products to market due to the port standoff. Growers and producers have told me they...
The IRS scandals just keep on coming. First, the agency targeted conservative groups seeking non-profit status. Originally characterized by IRS officials as a couple of rogue agents in Cincinnati, the practice was later revealed to be a politically-motivated campaign coordinated by Lois Lerner, the head of the IRS Exempt Organizations Unit. Then, Lerner’s infamous “missing” emails blocked investigators’ efforts to discover if the White House was involved. Now, the Internal Revenue Service is under fire for using federal...
February 20 was judgment day, in a sense, for many of the 1,060-plus bills introduced in the Senate for this legislative session. It was the “cutoff” for our 13 policy committees to decide which of the bills assigned to them move forward, and which bills go by the wayside. This is not exactly a case of separating the wheat from the chaff, as many of the measures that did not survive the deadline have redeeming qualities -- they simply need more work before they can win committee approval. I was glad to see many familiar fac...
