This is a six-part series for each Sunday of the six weeks of Lent. The dictionary defines a fan as “an enthusiastic admirer.” Fans want to be close enough to Jesus to get all the benefits, but not so close that it requires sacrifice. The six-week study helps attendees work on developing and understanding the relationship between Christians and Jesus. The study c...

OLYMPIA. Sen. Mark Schoesler said the jobs-education-budget focus of the Senate Majority Coalition Caucus is exemplified by a school-construction funding bill passed unanimously by the Senate Monday. Typically money for school construction is part of the capital budget, which lawmakers don’t tend to adopt until late in a legislative session. Schoesler, R-Ritzville, said Senate Bill 5445 would make that money available much sooner, placing $475 million from bond sales into the state school-construction account as soon as t...

After trailing for the majority of the game, the Tigercats snuck past the Rosalia Spartans to earn a 50-44 win during the first round game. The T...

According to our local newspaper, the citizens will be asked whether to continue to upgrade the existing East Adams Rural Hospital (EARH) facilities or to build anew. There may be an attempt to inject a bit of humor here as we are told, “Commissioners have already embraced the building committee’s recommendation that new construction is the most viable and likely the most affordable option.” Why ask the citizens to pay the unnecessary costs inflicted upon them by those who were hired to serve us? The persons respo...
Immigration, the deficit, gun control and jobs are definitely the hot topics that will face Congress as we plunge into 2013. We have a democratic senate that has not passed a budget in almost four years and a combined Congress that did less and spent more time in recess than any Congress since the 1940s. We need to remember that the Senate is required by law to pass a budget each year. The two parties are pointing fingers, but we only need to look at President Obama as he is the primary Senator who eviscerated President...

I hope that you’ve been paying attention to what has been taking place around the country. I’m talking about the weather, not sports right now. It’s amazing at just how bad some of the storms that have hit the Northeast have been. The weather forecasters predictions of snow accumulation and total nastiness have been remarkably accurate. I like the four seasons that we have in the Northwest. I’m not a huge fan of winter, but I tolerate it because spring is just around the corne...
Dear Friends, The Legislature is already past the halfway mark of the time allotted for its policy committees to complete their first round of work. In the Senate that means our 13 policy committees have two weeks left to act on Senate bills (the two fiscal committees always get extra time – until March 1 this year). While our Majority Coalition Caucus is moving forward on our three priorities – jobs, education and a sustainable budget – our members are continuing to pursue legislation that would help people they serve and b...
Our Founding Fathers recognized certain rights are inherent to all Americans, which is why they had the wisdom and foresight to draft the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, documents that were forged by life experiences in the fight for freedom and democracy against tyranny and oppression. The Bill of Rights, composed of the first ten amendments to the Constitution, serves to protect the natural rights of liberty and property. Specifically, it guarantees our freedom of speech, freedom of religion, the right to due process,...
