There are two types of students: those of which who can be heard saying, “I love the book we are reading in English, I can’t wait to discuss it in class”, as opposed to their classmates, “Will this be on the test?” Students can be intrinsically motivated—wanting to learn in order to satisfy their curiosity—or extrinsically motivated—interested in achievement more than the content being delivered to them. Being intrinsically or extrinsically motivated does not mean one student is superior to another, it simply means they are...
The seemingly endless stream of Obama Administration rules to circumvent Congress and states is driving people away from finding practical solutions to problems and into courtrooms filled with high-paid attorneys waging a “paperwork” war. Case in point: EPA and Army Corps issued long-awaited rules in March 2014 seeking to clarify Clean Water Act regulatory jurisdiction over additional bodies of water, particularly those that are seasonal or dependent on rain and wetlands near streams. Opponents of the rules, which range fro...

In terms of governing, the year ahead must be about more than allowing the president to control the national debate through executive actions during his presidency’s lame duck period. Conservatives must unite around a common vision. Instead of simply reacting to the president’s agenda of top-down rules. Congress must lay out a positive national agenda that allows individual freedom to flourish and creates opportunity. Under the lea...
Many might know that there was a house fire in Ritzville on Saturday. This fire was a large loss to the family and nothing I say will make that better. This is our training night where we train in fire ground operations. As the training officer I’d like to thank all the firefighters for the time they spent on those Monday n...
Every new job comes with the expectation of a steep learning curve. The new mayor position is no exception. As with any new job, the initial reality is not what the original expectation was. While city business and community service is paramount, one aspect of this position surprises me. There are days it seems city hall is a receptacle for complaints. Even though every complaint has an element of validity, the scope and content seem unnecessary in a small community such as ours. There are the expected complaints of...
