  • Mitigating the symptoms of senioritis

Emma Aldrich, LRHS Student Correspondent|Updated Jan 25, 2018

While apathy is a symptom of many diseases, laziness itself is not a diagnosable illness. Students suffering from senioritis would beg to differ. Senioritis is the supposed “disease” that afflicts high school seniors, whose symptoms include waning motivation, poor studying habits, repeated absences, and being overall dismissive. With the second semester beginning on Friday, Jan. 26, several students have self-diagnosed themselves. “Yes, I have senioritis,” admitted Morgan Lane. “I am so not motivated to do my calculus or my S...

  • Government shutdown wasted time

Congressman Dan Newhouse, Fourth District|Updated Jan 25, 2018

As your representative in Congress, I take the responsibility to provide for the federal government’s operations very seriously. Continuing resolutions, or extensions of funding from previous fiscal years, are a terrible budgeting option for our country. This fiscal year, the House of Representatives passed all 12 of our bills necessary for the appropriations process, but the Senate has still not even passed a single one. This leaves Congress only capable of funding the government in short spans, resulting in an unstable e...

  • Legislative Commentary

Senator Mark Schoesler, Ninth District|Updated Jan 25, 2018

Even though the pace of the “short” legislative sessions is always faster anyway, the Senate’s new Democrat majority seems to be in a particular rush to get certain bills through the process this year. With two notable exceptions, the long-overdue fix for the Hirst court decision and the new capital budget, the major bills Democrats have brought up for votes seem to be more about specific interest groups. Their emphasis on social issues is a big change from the jobs-education-budget focus our Republican-led coalition broug...

  • New Year’s Thoughts

    Eric Walker, Board Chairman|Updated Jan 25, 2018

The turn of a year is traditionally a time for individuals and institutions to look both back and foreword. For your District, 2017 was a year with good news and not-so-good news. The renovation work, requiring blocks of the facility to be closed off for extended periods, significantly reduced patient-traffic flow for almost the whole first quarter. Then, the burden of the Care Center continued. And we lost, through his retirement from the Board, a great asset in Jerry Snyder. On the good side, though, despite all the...

  • Current political climate

    Updated Jan 25, 2018

Changes, amendments, appeals, initiatives … in politics, the culture, media, society, our state/county/country/world. Voting is just the first step. Now we need to communicate directly (phone, town hall meetings, lobbying) or indirectly, with a letter, telegram or electronic means. Perhaps, your editorial letters or your group (Lions Club, Grange, Eagles, School Board, etc.) will make a difference. Get the media behind you. Sometimes changes can be bad or not so good. It wasn’t until 1920-1921 that women’s suffr...

  • John Spellman, best leader for tough times

    Don C. Brunell, Business Commentator|Updated Jan 25, 2018

Too often, virtues and accomplishments of quiet leaders go unsung. Such is the case with John Spellman, former Washington governor and King County executive, who died on Jan. 16 at the age of 91. Now many friends, colleagues and adversaries from both political parties extol Spellman’s courage, integrity, leadership, humility, tenacity, wisdom, inclusiveness, helpfulness and civility: all values of a strong and effective leader. Spellman was the right person for our state during some of the most difficult times we faced s...
