This year’s legislative session is under way at the Capitol. It began at noon on Jan. 9 with many of us, me included, taking the oath of office. Two days later the governor and the executive branch’s other elected officials were sworn in, followed by the governor’s State-of-the-State speech. Aside from the ceremonies, it was a typical first week in that we quickly got down to the business of introducing and hearing legislation in committees. As you know, I am always glad to spend as much time as I can with people who come... Full story
Fifty years ago, Boeing, Weyerhaeuser and PACCAR were the “Crème de la crème” of Washington’s publicly traded corporations. Twenty-five years ago, Microsoft, Costco and Starbucks joined the list. Now, when people talk about our state’s top businesses, Alaska Airlines is part of that conversation. Alaska Air Group, consisting of Alaska, Horizon and now Virgin America airlines, is Seattle-based. It is important to Washington because 7,000 of its 19,000 employees are located here and when indirect employment is added, it create...
America is not the norm. As citizens of one of the world’s oldest constitutional republics, every American, myself included, sometimes needs reminding about the extent to which our freedoms and traditions are the exception rather than the rule in human history. The rule of law and constitutional limits on government power should not be taken for granted. The orderly transition of power from one presidential administration to the next is one of the fundamental principles that ensure stability for our system of s...

While science fiction still plays an irreplaceable role in the inspiration process, engineers are making yesterday’s fantasies become today’s reality. Because of robotics increasing capability to perform real life functions in medicine, aerospace, and countless other industries, LRHS students in the physics class are embarking on a new project that will glean tangible results: the construction of robotic arms. While the...

You could say that I’m rooting for global warming. If the icebergs melt and the seas rise let’s just say I’m glad I’m close to 300 miles away from the Pacific Ocean....

The team began the game determined to out-play their opponents by...
The Broncos reached the midway point in the season and set their sights on battling for two league victories during the past week. Head Coach Dustan Arlt said first the loss to Davenport the week prior and then the second loss to Wilbur-Creston created two consecutive weeks of frustration. The Jan. 13 game against the Wildcats did not go in the...
