  • In a Football World

    Dale Anderson|Updated Jan 12, 2017

It seems that the older I get the less I enjoy cold weather. I know a lot of people who really like snow and go skiing whenever possible. I’m not a skier and I can’t say that I have been sledding for a long time. But I do know snow is a good thing for the winter crops and we need the snow in the mountains for sure. I’ve said for a number of years if snow would fall on the fields and in the mountains and stay off the roads I think that would be a good thing for a lot of us. I d...

  • Legislative Commentary

Senator Mark Schoesler, Ninth District|Updated Jan 12, 2017

There’s nothing like a winter bird-hunting trip to offset all the activity that goes with celebrating Christmas and the coming of the New Year. I managed to put farming chores and the Legislature on the back burner long enough to break the shotgun out more than once recently. First came a duck hunt on the Yakima River near the Tri-Cities, and then some pheasant hunting off to the east, aided by my four-legged friend Colt, the faithful Vizsla. Besides winding down from the holidays it allowed me to see the ongoing benefits o...

  • Avoiding déjà vu all over again

    Don C. Brunell, Business Commentator|Updated Jan 12, 2017

The late Yogi Berra coined the phrase “it’s déjà vu all over again!” It is used extensively to describe political miscues. Case in point: ObamaCare. Recently, Wall Street Journal’s Kimberley Strassel wrote a column describing President Obama’s failure with the Affordable Care Act (ACA). “The vision of the president calling on his party members to—yet again—lay down their political lives for his ‘signature’ law was a reminder of how this disaster began.” Unfortunately, Republicans, who now control Congress and the White...

  • Stand with Israel by rejecting UN attack

Congressman Dan Newhouse, Fourth District|Updated Jan 12, 2017

In the final weeks of the Obama administration, few actions have been as shocking as the decision to abandon our best ally in the Middle East, Israel. Israel not only shares our democratic values, but it is also a key U.S. ally in anti-terrorism efforts. The U.S. has traditionally exercised its veto power it has on the United Nations Security Council to prevent one-sided anti-Israel measures from being approved. The shameful abstention by the Obama administration in December’s Security Council vote on Resolution 2334, which w...

  • The reset button for 2017

Mayor Gary Cook, City of Ritzville|Updated Jan 12, 2017

9 is finally in our rearview mirror and the start of a new year is always an opportunity to be optimistic about the future. I think we all look forward to a “better” year, regardless of how we define that individually. Changes have taken place at the City of Ritzville as well. Articles from time to time in this paper have informed (and perhaps amused) you on the arduous budget process we must go through each year leading up to Jan. 1. For 2017 the City Council, finance committee, city staff and myself have all exp...

  • Being grateful in the year ahead

Rev. Richard Lee, New Hope Center|Updated Jan 12, 2017

If you are reading this article, then you have made it to another year. The year 2016 is notable for the seemingly high number of celebrity deaths that occurred. Some have adopted a superstitious view that the year of 2016 was somehow cursed. The fact is all of humanity is indeed “cursed” with mortality. It’s not the year, but our limited time on earth that we should be aware of. In our all-to-brief lives, we sometimes take for granted our family, friends, and good health. It is when we begin to lose all three of these that...
