  • Ritzville residents asked to be on alert for counterfeit bills

Chief David McCormick, Ritzville Police Department|Updated Apr 30, 2015

On April 27 there were three $50 counterfeit bills passed at local businesses in Ritzville. Each of the bills has the same serial number. The paper quality is not the same as US Currency, there are no visible embossed strips when you hold the bills up to light, the ink appears smeared, the color is off, there are no fibers visible in the paper, and the photo and other markings are not crisp. The serial number displayed on these $50.00 bills is AG61812422B If you suspect you have one of these bills or someone is attempting to...

  • Credit card fraud affects local residents

Chief David McCormick, Ritzville Police Department|Updated Nov 28, 2013

There has been a rash of credit card fraud taking place that has escalated to an epidemic. Because we live in a small community and communicate with each other, it might seem like this fraud is based locally. I received several complaints indicating this fraud may be the result of a card skimmer being placed at a local gas station. I met with the manager and she had the service technician for the fuel pumps check each pump and the card reader in the store and found no skimmer device. A short time later the US Secret Service...

  • Vehicle prowling continues

Chief David McCormick, Ritzville Police Department|Updated Feb 7, 2013

Over the past couple months we have been plagued with vehicle prowling in Ritzville. Despite recent arrests, it seems to continue. Just last week, we had four separate reports of vehicles being entered through unlocked doors. Change, small electronic items, sunglasses, small personal items, clothing, shoes, and even a handgun, are among the items taken. One thing in common with each one of these vehicle prowls is the vehicles have been left unlocked. First of all, do not leave valuables in your vehicles; take them in the...

Chief David McCormick, Ritzville Police Department|Updated Dec 13, 2012

We have not had any measurable snow yet, but it is on the way. In recent years, the city snowplows and grader have had incidents while plowing that have resulted in damage to parked vehicles along the curb. It is requested of all citizens, if there measureable slow fall and the city crews begin plowing in the city, you move all your vehicles off the city streets in a timely manner as not to hinder the plowing efforts. There are numerous seldom-used vehicles, cars, trucks, tractors, camp trailers, RV’s, car trailers and o...

  • Be careful what you post on Facebook

Chief David McCormick, Ritzville Police Department|Updated Oct 25, 2012

Recently a Ritzville resident posted on her Facebook page that she was in Spokane for the evening, including pictures of the location she was at with friends. When she got home in the early morning hours, she discovered she had been the victim of a residential burglary, in which a substantial amount of cash and personal items had been taken. The victim feels the suspects were acquaintances of hers as she could not find any signs of forced entry into the residence and it happened while she was in Spokane that evening. That...

  • Sidewalks are for walkers

Chief David McCormick, Ritzville Police Department|Updated Oct 18, 2012

After many years of business owners and concerned citizens requesting something be done about the bicyclists, skateboarders and rollerbladers on the downtown business district sidewalks, the City Council passed an ordinance prohibiting these modes of transportation on the sidewalks between Adams Street on the west, Columbia Street on the east, Broadway Avenue on the north and Railroad Avenue on the south. The penalty for violating this ordinance is $100. The intent is not to issue citations and refer juveniles to the Adams...

Recently several Ritzville residents have received an official looking document from Home Emergency Insurance Solutions. The company has had to answer two government actions in the past ye...

  • Kids can Shop with a Cop

Chief David McCormick, Ritzville Police Department|Updated Nov 17, 2011

This year I was contacted by the person that has been making a substantial donation for several years to the Zion Philadelphia Church for the Shop with a Cop Program. It was requested I become more involved with this program as the police department may be able to better identify the children that are in need and insure the overall goal of this program is met. Based on the amount of the donations received, staff from the police department and Ritzville School District will identify a minimum of 10 children from families that...

  • Don’t become a victim of a scam

Chief David McCormick, Ritzville Police Department|Updated Jul 28, 2011

Recently two senior citizens in our community received phone calls from subjects indicating they were the senior’s grandsons. In each case the caller said they needed money from their grandparents to get out of jail in a foreign country. In the first case the caller said he was in jail in Mexico and needed his grandmother to send him money so he could get out of jail. She told him to call his father and the caller said he was too embarrassed to call him. Her grandson was sitting on the couch next to his father at their h...
